Hi all,

I am moving to Sydney, Australia soon, and I will be looking for a job. If anybody here from Australia can help me, I would appreciate it.

The best way to help is by offering me a job with a good pay. But if you can't, I will appreciate whatever you provide.

Thank you.

levonk,

I wish you well in your move. Can you tell us what you want to do and what your skill level is?

This is not a CV.

I want to work in the design/printing/publishing business.

I have no degree in this field. My degrees are in other fields. But I have been in the printing business for more than 25 years. I learned how everything works from my father, who owned the business. I have done design and layout for 22 years. Inherited and run my own business for 6 years. I am proficient with the Adobe Creative Suite (still on CS2, but can learn CS4 in no time).

I can run a printing business, manage projects, etc.

Sounds like a pretty beefy resume. It also sounds like you're in new territory where you actually have to apply for a job. Work on your stationery and resume. Create a website of recent samples, etc., etc. Your work should do the talking for you. I'm not sure you'd be happy walking into a print shop and starting all over again. Take a look at corporate marketing communications. Where you go is probably based on the type of work you've done. You may want to look at a medium to large ad agency's production department. There could be franchise ops if you want to run a new print business, you won't know until you settle in over there. Keep in mind, running a print business is no way near designing, totally two different worlds. Even running a design business is different than designing for someone else.

Thanks John. To be honest, I am looking to start my own business down under. Franchise is a good option, but since it is a totally new market for me, I would like to be employed for a while to get acquainted, and cover my expenses.

Be aware that it can be tricky to start your own business while working for a shop in the same field. Easier if you are working prepress in a print shop, and freelancing design, or working design, and freelancing production.

The trick is not to be competing against your employer. They tend to get upset about that, and may even help you kick off your business with a lawsuit. Best solution is when you can actually get your employer to be one of your customers ... doing excess work at home in your spare time, and then eventually going freelance. Just don't poach clients from the old company, for at least a year.
